REVIEW

BONE - Jeff Smith
main characters: Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, Smiley Bone, Thorn, Grandma Ben
summary: Bone is about three Bone cousins, Fone Bone, Smiley bone and Phoney Bone, who get run out of their home town thanks to Phoney's latest failed attempt to pull a massive-scale scam. Stuck in uncharted desert territory, they stumble upon a valley from where they try to get back to their beloved Boneville. However, every step they take gets them more involved in the matters of the valley, and dark things lurk waiting for them in the shadows.

Bone is published in a multitude of languages all over the world right now, and is gaining a larger audience every day. Not too surprising, because the combination of a cute, breezy foreground story and an ever unfolding, original, eerie background mythology surpasses even the widely appreciated Star Wars-series in storytelling quality - in my honest opinion.
Not bad for an originally self-supporting comic artist who started the series in 1991.
Bone has been René van Densen's main inspiration in making the Probeersel series.

These sites about Bone offer nice introductional material, as well as valuable background information. Rich reading grounds for both veteran Bone fans and people who have not yet been charmed by this rich world of Jeff Smith's imagination.
